The League of Transformation (LOT) Foundation has called for stronger integration of agroecology into Malawi’s climate change policies, saying the approach is critical for building community resilience and restoring degraded ecosystems.
Speaking during a farm training session on climate-resilient farming in Lilongwe, LOT Chairperson Dr Webster Kameme said communities are increasingly struggling to cope with the impacts of climate change, making agroecology a necessary intervention rather than an option.
He said there is a need to promote inclusive participation in the development and implementation of key climate policy instruments such as the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and the draft Climate Change Bill.
“Communities are struggling to earn a living due to the impacts of climate change on their livelihoods. Agroecology must be integrated into our national policies and strategies to accelerate action aimed at addressing these impacts,” said Kameme.
He added that advancing agroecology through national policies is essential for restoring degraded forests, improving soil health and strengthening resilience among vulnerable populations, warning that climate change is no longer a future threat but a present reality confronting farmers across the country.
